All the Buzz is about going green; reducing our waste output by resourcing existing materials to cut down on production and disposal of waste. With environmental changes and economic climate being what is most of us are rethinking our way of life starting even with our simple daily routine. From the gas pump, grocery stores, waste disposal, method of transportation just to name a few we are learning to change our habits to save our habitat.
The need for us to change, challenge ourselves, and adapt to going green we are discovering some of the unexpected wonders that can come out of a global need. This is also true with artists, designers, craftier,and tradesman alike. Creative types are mining our waste resources and recycle bins across the globe, making old new again. Artist are re-purposing trash and give it a shiny new second life. Recycling everything from glass & plastic bottles, old books, foodstuff containers, magazines, just to name a few, saving it from the landfills and dumps.
Re-purposing is all the rage. Wonderful vintage clothing re-purposed into corsages, handbags, quilted cards, and market re-use totes. Glass bottles melted down to form cheese trays, tire rubber to form soles of sandals, kitchen utensils into 3d altered art. Fusing plastic bags into a fabric strength materials to reuse. Possibilities are endless. The more uses you can find for objects the more kudos goes to you. This recycle revolution has been long overdue. It is amazing to see all of the ingenious ways artist have made throwaway into something to wear, display, and function and this is only the beginning. We have been a use and refuse society for far to long.
Get started – do your homework. If you don’t know about recycling get informed. There are many sites and organizations on the web that can show you how to get started. Many public and private groups, interested in the arts, have collaborated to host recycled art show, as well as crafting class for kids and adults alike with recyclable materials. You can lead by example, a good cause is contagious. Carry a reuse bag with you to the market, buy recycled merchandise, talk about the changes that you are making to others. You have the ability to craft change!
